The Red Lion

A pub in every corner! I have a friend who does not know the names of the streets in Norwich, but navigates perfectly if you tell him which pub is closest to your meeting point. The Red Lion sits right beside the river, which makes its location quite cosy. What’s more interest is that in Norwich there is a pub for every day of the year. The city was once home to over 700 pubs. May be an idea to take a tour around some of them and find out all the juicy tidbits about their past.
I am many things - a life coach, a diversity champion, a freelance writer and translator, a dog lover, a citizen of the world, etc - but never thought of myself as a photographer. Norwich inspires me to capture snapshots of this fine Norman city. Take a trip down Norwich lanes or enjoy a walk in the park with me.

I used to live in Red Lion House (used to be the pub) in a village called Ash, near to Canterbury - well several lifetimes ago I did! Thanks for the reminder.
Brings thoughts of highwaymen and sawdust floors…

Highwaymen nowadays are a bit more sophisticated - and a lot more dangerous, don’t you think so, Jilly? Thanks for dropping by.

Great photo. Interesting story about the friend navigating via pubs vs street names!
Thanks for visiting my NorthBayPhoto blog. Always lots of space in Northern Ontario (sometimes there might be too much space as we have wildlife - bears - that will wander into the city).

Laurent, what I love about Norwich is that it’s so eclectic. We have loads of old buildings and new ones as well. We try to keep up with modernization without losing the past.

Interesting, a pub for each day of the year. But there used to be two pubs for each day.
I seem to remember reading that Red Lion is the most popular name for pubs in Britain.

I believe the Red Lion is the commonest pub name in England. I can’t think of one Hyde though - it has a White Lion and three Cheshire Cheese’s though.

Steve, yep that used to be the case. shame now we’re down to 1 pub a day. Yeah, ‘red lion’ seems to be quite a popular pub name in the uk.

So far ati, the pub has not been part of my social life - since the smoking ban has been in effect only this month. But I know what you mean. Pero may pub ako na paborito - yung Mad Moose. Masarap pagkain at sila talaga noon pa bawal na sigarilyo. Lapit lang sa bahay. Eh dito bawat kanto may pub at may simbahan! Walang biro.

I took a walk around the block the other week and discovered a Red Lion in Hyde. I’ve pencilled in 22nd Sept as the date it’ll appear on Hyde DP
