Healing Bench

Within the Halls grounds, there are nooks and crannies for patients to be by themselves and reflect. If my surroundings were this beautiful, I’m sure it won’t be too long til I’m back on my feet again.

The 19th and 20th centuries saw many improvements in living conditions, and in the standard of accommodation, available at the Great Hospital. The original Master’s House, Chaplains’ House, and St Helen’s House, have been converted into comfortable, well-appointed flats. Cottages in traditional almshouse style, but with modern interiors, have been built in the grounds, and a 20 bedded Residential Care Home provides a supportive environment for frailer residents.

The Great Hospital at Bishopgate, North East of the Cathedral, is an Almshouse founded in 1249 by Bishop Walter de Suffield that has cared for the citizens of Norwich for over 750 years.
The group of buildings includes a church, cloister, medieval refectory, and a Victorian hall. It has now been decided to open these to the people of Norwich and, in the process, raise funds towards the upkeep of these magnificent buildings.
